HISTORY OF THE IOWA SPEEDWAY

The Iowa Speedway, located in Newton, Iowa, officially opened its doors in 2006 and quickly gained recognition as one of America’s premier short tracks. Designed with input from NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace, the 0.875-mile tri-oval blends the feel of a superspeedway with the close-quarters action of a short track. Its progressive banking and smooth surface allow for multiple racing lines, making it a favorite among drivers and fans alike. From its early years, the track welcomed a variety of racing series, including IndyCar, ARCA, NASCAR Xfinity Series, and the NASCAR Truck Series.

Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, Iowa Speedway built a reputation for delivering exciting races and serving as a proving ground for up-and-coming talent. Many future stars of NASCAR and IndyCar, including the likes of Ryan Blaney and Josef Newgarden, honed their skills at the Newton circuit. 

Despite its popularity, the track faced uncertainty when NASCAR’s national series stopped scheduling events there after 2019, causing concern among fans and local supporters. However, its facilities remained in excellent condition, and grassroots racing continued to keep the venue active.

In 2024, Iowa Speedway made a major comeback as NASCAR announced it would host a Cup Series race at the track for the first time in history. The announcement was met with widespread excitement, signaling a new chapter for the venue. Now fully owned and operated by NASCAR, Iowa Speedway stands as a rare blend of small-town charm and big-league competition. With a rich history, strong fan base, and a layout designed for intense racing, the track continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of American motorsport.
